Stop Doing These 6 Things for a Better Personal Life

What you consider to be a “better life” is likely different than every other person in this world. And your own definition of a better life can change by your age and life circumstances. For example, the things someone wants in their twenties are typically quite different from what they want in their sixties.

Despite varying ideas and definitions of what constitutes a good life, however, there are some habits and mindsets that everyone should stop entertaining right now if they want to get the most out of their life. Below are six of these:

  1. Regretting Past Failures

It’s not that your past doesn’t matter. Mistakes are a great teacher, as long as you learn from them. But your past is what has prepared you to live in the present and the future. Whether than dwelling on your mistakes, use them to make better decisions going forward, and focus on what’s ahead.

  1. Saying Yes to Everyone

None of us like to disappoint people. But if we say yes to everything and everyone, we will eventually run out of time to foster the most important relationships and goals in our lives. Every time you say no, it leaves room for something else—whether that’s pursuing a dream, spending time with a loved one, or doing anything else that brings fulfillment to your life. Plus, if you always say yes, chances are you are adding bad stress to your circumstances.

  1. Working That Unfilling Job

We spend a lot of time at work. In fact, it’s common for many of us to spend more time at work than at home. So, if you hate your job, it’s going to be really difficult to live a fulfilling life.

Consider your interest and skills, and if you’re in an unfulfilling job, make a change now. These days, you can earn a college degree completely online, which will save you money and leave you more flexibility to focus on other aspects of your life. For instance, if you wanted to work in finance, you could pursue a degree in accounting and improve your prospects significantly. Just make sure the online school you choose is accredited and offers affordable tuition.

  1. Living in Fear of the Future

Just as you don’t want to live in the past, you also don’t want to dwell in the future. There is enough to worry about today, and while you want to take steps to prepare for the future, it’s not going to help you to stress out about what’s to come. Try to focus on what you currently have in front of you, be present, and you will naturally make decisions that help to set you up for a bright future.

  1. Overcomplicating Your Life

The more complexity you have in your life, the more confusion and stress there will be. Think of ways you can simplify things. This might mean purging your belongings and decluttering. It might mean committing to fewer events and volunteering opportunities. And if you learn to say no to people and things, it will naturally make your life more simple.

  1. Stop Neglecting Self-Care

Finally, you cannot expect to live a fulfilling life if you don’t take care of your physical and emotional wellbeing. Make sure you’re eating a healthy, well-balanced diet. Find an exercise activity you enjoy doing, and try to maintain a fitness routine for five days a week. And get your sleep; adults need at least seven hours of sleep to function at full capacity, so come up with a bedtime routine that helps your mind and body rest and recharge.

We are apt to focus on things we can do to improve our lives. But sometimes, it’s what we need to eliminate that will help us take the next step to a higher quality of life. Consider the six items above, and keep looking for other things in your life that you can cut out.
